Ill-fitting suits and frumpy trousers need not apply here.
For menswear that is free of all the dowdiness, S2VS embraces the charm of a lived-in wardrobe with its fresh, urbane and utilitarian collections. Designer Sean William Salim created S2VS in May 2007, looking to reinvent American conceptions of typical men’s dress.
S2VS, which is produced entirely in Shanghai, turns to Chinese garment workers for inspiration in its latest collection. Often dressing themselves leftover stock or defective samples, the workers reinvented the unwanted garments by adding embellishments, patches or redesigning the clothes to suit their own liking.
The workers’ well-worn looks translate into a Fall-Winter collection of chunky knits, tailored outerwear and button-down plaid shirts in a blue-green palette. Functional fabrics and unexpected detailing gives S2VS its edge. The S2VS man is into cool and casual menswear – with an appreciation for vintage and contemporary styling elements.
S2VS designer Salim graduated from the menswear design program at the Parson’s The New School for Design in New York in 2007. There, the designer interned for fashion houses like Isaac Mizrahi and Tim Hamilton. Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, Salim grew up in Singapore and the United States.
The menswear brand can be found at a number of retailers worldwide, including Cry Wolf in New York, Moxsie in California and asos.com in the United Kingdom.
