Designer Peter Phan doesn’t shy away from creating bold designs that flirt with color, volume and texture. He is a Los Angeles based designer, outfitting an unabashed Hollywood clientele in search of powerful, sexy and confident fashions.
The eponymous Peterphan Label collection launched in November 2009, introducing a line of jewel-toned dresses, leather corseted tops, lacy black separates and evening gowns with an explosion of ruffles, rising and falling like waves. The choice in fabrics ranges from silks, feathers, lace, silk and leather. But Phan will not rule out the use unconventional materials – using copper, aluminum or wiring as trim.
Phan moved to the United States at the age of 9, eventually receiving a scholarship to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles.
Inspiration for a collection might come in the form of a visit to an art museum, a movie, a song, or comic book. Phan’s latest Fall-Winter 2010 collection bears a nod to the Disney cartoon character “Cruella de Vil.” And his latest bridal couture collection takes its cues from architecture and comic book heroes.
The designer currently makes pieces for special order, with a few pieces due to arrive in Los Angeles stores. Eventually, Phan says that he would like to open flagship store, selling online as well as sourcing to international boutiques.
